Britain Seeks to Ban Violent Internet Porn
Police and anti-porn campaigners welcomed the proposal but free-speech groups called it censorship, saying there was no proven link between violent imagery and violent behavior.
Home Office Minister Paul Goggins said the government felt a duty to prevent cases such as the murder of Longhurst, a 31-year-old teacher strangled by a friend who was obsessed with violent pornography he found on the Internet.
"This is material which is extremely offensive to the vast majority of people, and it should have no place in our society," Goggins said.
The government's proposals would make it an offense to possess "extreme pornographic material which is graphic and sexually explicit and which contains actual scenes or realistic depictions of serious violence, bestiality or necrophilia."
Viewing such material would constitute possession, although the government said it did not plan to prosecute people who accidentally stumbled across the images.
Such legislation would be a first for any Western nation, the Home Office said. Those convicted would face up to three years in prison.
The Obscene Publications Act already bans publication of images of sexual brutality on the Internet but is all but impossible to enforce unless the material is hosted in Britain.
The Internet Watch Foundation, an industry-funded watchdog that encourages Internet users to report illegal content, says almost none of the obscene material it found on the Net was hosted in Britain; the majority came from the United States.
That makes such matters very difficult to investigate, said Metropolitan Police Commander Dave Johnston, who welcomed the government's proposal.
Chris Evans of the pressure group Internet Freedom said Internet users "should be able to make up their own minds about what they view."
"The idea that you can prevent violent action by banning such images is nonsense," he said.
The government's proposal is a long way from becoming law. Interested parties have until Dec. 2 to comment on the plans, which would then have to be drafted into a bill and passed by Parliament before taking effect.

Editorial:BTK Killer and BDSM, Worlds Apart.
Dennis Rader, the so called "BTK" killer, has been convicted and sentenced to 10 consecutive life terms for a series of murders in the Wichita, Kansas area.
BTK, or Bind, Torture and Kill, was the nickname Rader used for himself.
There has been a flurry of discussion in the various online BDSM related chat rooms and discussion forums regarding the BTK killer. The BDSM community by and large has disavowed any connection between Rader and BDSM or Dominance and Submission (D/s), as practiced by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
On one BDSM forum, a submissive woman recounted an incident which happened to her while involved with a Dominant. She stated that the Dominant stopped his activity, afraid that he had "hurt her". A sub has the need for physical stimulations to produce endorphins, and those needs are met in bdsm in a variety of methods, from mild to what may be considered extreme. In her case, the Dominant was concerned that he had gone a bit too far.
Another forum post regarding BTK:
"Btk admits that his crimes have sadistic tendencies, that he takes "slaves", that he is a sexual deviant, and he mentions the word "control" quite a bit. It's been said that submissives may really be the one in control because they have to consent to the practice and because they have a safe word. I fully believe that some psycho could decide this is not enough and combine it with a need to kill, to have full control.
Granted there are ALOT of oddballs in the BDSM groups and of course the occasional "predator". BDSM'ers do try to take care of their own and keep those involved informed and safe. Not everyone can be protected from "evil doers" even in the real world...~sigh~.
Remember too, that it is only within the last twenty years or so that this "lifestyle" has come out of the closet so to speak and been given the coverage (good and bad). What BTK was practicing during the 70's + wasn't BDSM but some other sick perversion."
The primary tenet of BDSM is that all activity is "Safe, Sane and Consensual". In addition, practitioners conduct a detailed negotiation prior to activity, discussing the various individual sexual and non sexual components, setting limitations. The health and safety of both parties is constantly monitored, and no activity is attempted beyond the knowledge and skill level of either the Dominant or submissive. Of course, there are some practitioners deemed "wannabe's" that do not adhere to these principles, however, legitimate participants take pride in their concern for the safety and welfare of their partner.

Rader used BDSM styled methods, however, no connection has been established between Rader and practitioners of BDSM.
The case of Dennis Rader may cause people to be more cautious in their lives, both on and offline. Meeting someone from online can be an enjoyable experience, if done with safety in mind.

Men do have trouble hearing women, scientists find
The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine
NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds.
Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said.
The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, "The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural 'melody' in their voices.
"This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice."
The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice.

Man Convicted In Lafayette Dominatrix's Murder
Jimmy Blunt, 23, hung and shook his head, talked to his attorney and glanced sadly at relatives who were in court when the verdict for the Jan. 12, 2003 death of 31-year-old Marisa Zumas was announced on Wednesday.
Blunt faces 50 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced by Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Burr on Aug. 24.
According to prosecutor Darryl Stallworth, Zumas was an escort who specialized as a dominatrix and made up to $10,000 a week working out of her Lafayette home. Blunt worked for her by looking after her 10-year-old son, he said.
Stallworth said he is unable to explain exactly what happened between Blunt and Zumas, but the theory he offered to jurors in his closing argument was that they had some sort of romantic relationship that went bad.
The prosecutor says it appears that Blunt "wanted a romantic relationship, but the feeling was not mutual."
Jurors concluded that the shooting was premeditated and deliberate, Stallworth said.
Zumas is survived by a 12-year-old son, her ex-husband, and several sisters who live out of state, Stallworth said.
Blunt's attorney, William Daley, was unavailable for comment.
